Phone distractions while working from home: a practical boundary
Reduce personal phone distractions at home with bounded focus blocks that keep work tools and urgent access available.
Phone distractions while working from home are not only a notification problem. A difficult start, household noise or a few seconds of waiting can prompt a self-initiated check. A useful boundary keeps work tools available while adding friction to the personal feed.

Write the output before you sit down
Replace “focus” with one visible result: draft three paragraphs, check one table or answer five tickets. Move the personal phone off the desk. Keep a work phone, authenticator or meeting tool available when the role requires it. Let the task and response duty determine the block length.
Separate three kinds of interruption
An incoming alert, an automatic app opening and a household interruption need different responses. Notification settings help the first; moving the phone out of sight helps the second; a visible work signal and agreed break time help the third. Do not load all three onto willpower.
A two-wave survey of 249 employees working from home during COVID-19 found associations between non-work interruptions and some work and well-being outcomes. The period and sample limit the result; it is not a universal causal claim about every home.

Build a capture list and a return point
Write the thing you want to check as one short cue and review the list after the chosen output. A break can be water, a window or a stretch without opening a feed. If you choose social media, set a clear end so “five minutes” does not quietly replace the next work block.
Protect work and safety exceptions
Messages from children or caregivers, team calls, on-call duties, VPN access, two-factor authentication and accessibility tools should remain available. Do not bypass employer policy or device security. When home interruptions are unavoidable, shorter blocks and more frequent planned checks may be more honest.
Limit the personal feed with Pawlock
Pawlock can schedule selected personal apps and sites for a work block while leaving work and urgent tools outside the selection. Pair the schedule with one concrete output, then review missed essential communication as well as completed work. Use the work notification guide to configure the alert side separately.
Frequently asked
Must the phone be in another room?
No. A shelf or drawer outside your sight may be enough; first test that necessary calls can still reach you.
Does Pawlock manage work notifications?
Pawlock limits selected apps and sites. Configure notification permissions separately and do not block work or security tools.
