How to stop checking work messages after hours

Agree on response expectations, preserve a route for urgent contact and build a small shutdown routine so work messages do not occupy every evening.

To reduce work-message checking after hours, agree when replies are expected and how genuine urgent issues will reach you. Then choose a closing routine and keep optional work apps out of that rest period. A silent inbox is easier to leave when you know what happens next.

Agree before switching off

An email arriving tonight does not necessarily require an answer tonight. Ask your manager rather than guessing. For example: “I will answer routine messages next working day. Which route should we use for something that cannot wait?” Adapt this to your actual role, time zone and on-call arrangements. This is a communication plan, not a statement of employment rights.

Close the workday deliberately

  • Write the next action for unfinished work.
  • Decide when you will next check the inbox.
  • Silence optional work alerts after your agreed finish.
  • Keep essential contacts available and test that route.
  • Close the laptop and move into one ordinary activity, such as preparing a meal.

When work and personal chats share an app

Mute the relevant work conversation rather than blocking a channel you need for family or care. If every evening becomes an emergency, revisit workload and team expectations. A systematic review found limited, mixed evidence for disconnection measures; implementation and workplace culture matter. A personal rule cannot guarantee recovery or change someone else's expectations.

Support the agreed boundary

Pawlock can schedule blocks for selected apps and sites. Choose the duration before the lock begins and exclude essential tools; active scheduled locks cannot be edited inside the app. For daytime interruptions, see managing work notifications.

Frequently asked

What if I am on call?

Keep the agreed duty channel available. Start with optional checks outside your duty periods and coordinate coverage where possible.

What if I check anyway?

Note whether the trigger was a real task, uncertainty or habit. Adjust that part of the plan the next day; missing important communication is not the goal.
